| LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract: The traditional Christianity of black North Americans offers an instructive case study in nonviolent transformation. This chapter treats black Christianity as the primary source behind the civil rights activism of Martin Luther King, Jr. It explores King's religious heritage for its power simultaneously to overturn ethnic victimization and to transform the victimizer - for its power to realize what he called "the beloved community."1 That power resides, by hypothesis, in a performative tradition of mimesis in black religion. The mimetic basis of such performances twofold, consisting in (1) an imitation of Christ - imitatio Christi - in which Jesus as "Suffering Servant" (Isaiah 53) provides a preeminent model for the nonviolent transformation of "victimage" (Girard); and in (2) 'homeopathic' (like-cures-like) applications, where diminishing forms of victimization are employed in order to forrestall, counter, or cure victimization in its most virulent, racist forms.
