This emphasis is implicit in titles such as The Scapegoat and Job: The Victim of His People. In these and other works Girard claims to overturn the accounts of violence as told by perpetrators. He seems engaged in restoring the truth of victims as arbitrarily selected "scapegoats" - selected not essentially because of crimes against society but because they bear certain marks or "stereotypes of persecution". Upon closer scrutiny, however, Girard himself can be seen to advance an arbitrary view of violence, representative of a specific class of persecutors: men. Male views of violence predominate in Girard's theory as elsewhere in Western intellectual history and discourse. Ironically, in his victim-centered theory Girard does not attend to the particular group of victims whose experience and view of violence threatens to overturn his theory: women. This critique of Girard's work focuses more on gender studies than on religious studies. The implications, of course, are compelling for theories of religion as well. The chapter juxtaposes to Girard's theory the social research of Carol Gilligan in the area of gender and moral development. Gilligan's book, In a Different Voice, is presented in order to add the missing voice of women to Girard's one-sided view of social violence. A concluding section connects the discussion to Alice Walker's "womanist" perspective of curing violence in her novel, The Color Purple. (Source: Chris Shea)  |8 0
