| LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract: The published works of René Girard interrogate relentlessly the nature and origin of human violence. No theme is more constant in all his oral or written utterance. In one volume of his work however - Things Hidden since the Foundation of the World - Girard is drawn to reconsider the biblical intimations of Apocalypse which he, in common with biblical fundamentalists, finds fascinating and remarkable. Girard sees an ironic fulfilment of the gospel Apocalypse in the fact that humanity now faces its first objectively apocalyptic moment. He is well aware, of course, that fundamentalists all along have been predicting this fulfilment in the form of world annihilation. Yet Girard is more afraid of our modern derision of fundamentalist-like prophecies than he is of the possibility that their apocalyptic predictions and activities might either help to precipitate nuclear cataclysm, or induce smugness in the face of an ecological Armageddon. In this essay fundamentalist and Girardian apocalyptic are juxtaposed, the origins, character and goals of modern fundamentalist apocalyptic noted. The result is that even as the remarkable power of Girard's apocalyptic presentiment is acknowledged, his seeming beguilement by a fundamentalist apocalyptic (which is ultimately diametrically opposed to his own) does raise a serious question of judgment that reaches well beyond the sphere of apocalyptic. In face of the present danger, it is far from clear that apocalyptic fundamentalists present a lesser threat than the legions of postmodern secularists whom Girard is so zealous to refute.
