Hume calls "the liberty of spontaneity", this question has to be answered in the affirmative, since it is this sense of liberty alone which would not conflict with deterministic concepts and thus would not be involved, even when an almighty God appears äs a deterministic power. This, however, is no longer the case, when it is an issue of what Hume termed "the human liberty of indifference". This form of freedom should be understood äs the self-assertion of the will, when it's expressions, the acts of will, are determined only through itself and not through external factors. Kant, just äs more recently Pannenberg and Krings, tried to show that the human liberty of indifference would not exclude a separate almighty divine creator. These attempts failed, with the result that only two possibilities are left: either one has to forego the human liberty of indifference in favour of God — äs Luther, Spinoza and Lessing did; or, äs early Schelling and Sartre suggest, one has to do without the idea of a pantocrator for the sake of the human liberty of indifference. | ||
