| Summary: | The article gives an overview of secular movements and developments in the Arab countries, especially in Lebanon and Egypt. It then examines the causes of the decline of secularism in recent years. Among these are the exhaustion of nationalist and marxist ideologies; class conflict; the supersession of modernism and the rise of postmodernism in the West; historical events such as the oil-price boom in the 70ies, the intellectual decline of the Arab capitals, the Iranian revolution of 1979 and the struggle against Israel.
