Zusammenfassung:Information is given on the recent demand in Egypt for the application of Sharia laws. While Muslims have always aspired to live by their own laws, the author points out that the recent demand for application of Sharia laws has to be seen in the context of a political movement which seeks political, economic and social change in the name of Islam. The Egyptian government does affirm its commitment to Islam but it hesitates to apply Sharia laws in order to maintain the present social order and in order to not annoy the West - to hold on to its relative stable foreign relations.
