| Résumé: | The thesis in this paper is that the "Nubi" (a group of partially detribalized and heterogenous Africans) are Muslim by faith but do not constitute a "tribe" in the usual African sense. The evidence mobilized to support the thesis in this essay consists of the following four inter-related components: 1) The "Nubi" as a people without an indigenous language of their own; 2) The "Nubi" as a people without a tribal myth of origin of their own; 3) The "Nubi" as a people without indigenous African names of their own; and 4) The "Nubi" as a people without a land, or "hinterland" of their own.
