L’exégèse du chapitre 17 — « Critique de la guerre offensive, I » — de l’oeuvre éponyme montre que les moïstes insistaient sur la nécessité d’opérer un choix critique entre deux termes opposés logiquement ou empiriquement incompatibles (ex. : juste/injuste, vrai/faux, positif/négatif), exclusifs l’un de l’autre et impossibles à harmoniser. Dans leurs écrits, le discernement est de surcroît lié à la raison langagière et à la dialectique. Il convient donc de reconsidérer le stéréotype qui présente la culture chinoise comme étant peu encline à l’analyse et réfractaire à l’esprit critique. | ||

The use of moral and intellectual discernment was for instance advocated with emphasis by Mozi (ca. 480-390 B.C.E.) and his School. The exegesis of chapter 17 — « Criticizing offensive war, I » — of the eponymous text shows that the Mohists insisted on the importance of operating a critical choice between logically or empirically incompatible terms (ex. : fair/unfair, true/false, positive/negative), which are mutually exclusive and impossible to harmonize. In their writings, discernment is closely linked with linguistic reason and dialectics. The common assumption claiming that analytical thinking and critical spirit is somehow underdeveloped in Chinese culture needs to be thoroughly reconsidered. | ||
