In the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, the fundamental concern of the Holy See is to preserve a Christian presence in the Holy Land and muster all efforts to foster a just solution to the dispute through peaceful means. In Lebanon, the Holy See has tried to preserve the integrity of the country with its multi-communitarian formula in order to save the Catholic communities. There the opposition to Holy See policy came from some elements in the Maronite community who believed that Christians in the Middle East had no other recourse than resorting to armed self-defence against Muslims. This solution jeopardized what the papacy was staunchly working for - a frank and sincere dialogue between the followers of Christ and the followers of Muhammad. (DÜI-Asd) | ||
