Summary: | An account of the changing performance of the women's movement in Egypt in the parliamentary elections since the 1950s. The focus is on the reasons for the deterioration of the position of women in political life in the post-Sadat era. It is argued that the Moslem fundamentalists, although having put the feminists on the defensive, have not yet stood the test of serious questioning, of whether their suggested solutions will actually cure Egypt's ills. The new climate created by the Moslem brothers might jolt women back into action. (DÜI-Asd) |
