Die Überbetonung funktionaler Bewältigung im Rahmen gängiger Ansätze hat nicht selten zur Folge, dass Patienten pathologisiert, ihre Beziehung zu sich selbst und zum Therapeuten gefährdet wird. Einsamkeit wird verstärkt, Akzeptanz der Schmerzen nicht selten erschwert. Als entlastend dagegen könnte sich eine Einstellung erweisen, wonach Schmerz als Bestandteil des Lebens anerkannt wird, der nur begrenzt kontrollierbar ist. Ein solches Verständnis bewahrt vor vorschneller Pathologisierung und überfordernden Ansprüchen an persönliche und therapeutische Einflussmöglichkeiten. Das Selbstwerterleben bleibt erhalten, die therapeutische Beziehung tragfähig. Einsamkeit wird gelindert, Akzeptanz des Unbeeinflussbaren erleichtert. 
520 |a In the following article, pain-therapeutic approaches are discussed in regard of their consequences on patients. The overemphasis of functional management within the framework of current concepts may often have as a consequence that the patient is pathologised, the relationship to himself and to his therapist is at risk. Loneliness is strengthened, acceptance of pain is complicated. Much more relief could bring an attitude, after which pain is recognized as a part of life, which can be controlled only in a restricted way. Such an understanding of pain protects the patient from being pathologised and relieves him from challenging demands on his and therapeutic possibilities. Self-esteem persists, the therapeutic relationship remains supportive. Loneliness is alleviated, acceptance of the uncontrollable is made easier.
