Description
Summary:The world's beginning
The Tengger Javanese are an ethnic Javanese people who live in the rugged uplands surrounding Mount Bromo in eastern Java. Tengger are the only Javanese to maintain an explicitly non-Islamic, Hindu tradition dating from Majapanit times. The Tengger litany of "The World's Beginning" shows an astonishing similarity to a Balinese exorcism prayer of the same name. The author discusses the form and meaning of the litany, its role in Tengger ritual and its significance for understanding Javanese history. (DÜI-Sen)
