Summary: | The activities of the Jews in the Duchies of Parma and Piacenza in the second half of the XVI century looks far more organised and certainly a good deal less passive than is normally thought. Despite Papal vetoes, the Jews continued to engage in quite a variety of activities which they did not even take the trouble to keep secret, with the open agreement of the Camera Ducale, sometimes with the seal of official approval and sometimes unofficially. Of course, a number of changes took place during the period: in their relationship with the city, in the composition and internal structure of the Jewish group, in its increasingly more exclusive relationship with central authority. The article studies the transformation of the juridical status of the Jews, and their position in the network of dynamic relationships between local and Duchy authorities. |
