Description
Summary:Mungiki, a religious movement arising out of Kikuyu prophesy and a political militia, known and feared for its violence, appeared on the Kenyan political scene in the 1990s. This movement seduced Kikuyu youth by playing on the memory of the Mau-Mau rebellion and on the ethos of vigilante groups. Attempts to impose itself as an autonomous political actor in the elections of December 2002, which has become the heart of its prophetic message, might in fact lead to the co-optation of the movement by the reigning political elite.
