Summary: | Peel, J. D. Y.: Gender in Yoruba religious change. - S. 136-166. Steegstra, Marijke: "A mighty obstacle to the gospel": Basel missionaries, Krobo women, and conflicting ideas of gender and sexuality. - S. 200-230. Behrends, Andrea: "Pogminga" - The "proper Dagara woman". An encounter between Christian thought and Dagara concepts. - S. 231-253 The articles in this issue examine historical encounters between a diverse range of Christian missionaries and West African communities. These works draw on archival materials from the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth century to address Catholic and Protestant mission activities in different regions of Ghana, and CMS engagements with Yoruba communities in Nigeria. The implications of Christian values and practices for constructions of gender are of particular significance to three of the four papers; and all of the authors explore the complex contradictions of what Birgit Meyer identifies as a "cultural politics" embedded in these encounters, and their consequences for West African history and culture.
