There is material and written evidence for a cult more and more influenced by the religious traditions of Egypt. Part of the changes was a proper identification of the deity with the statue itself. Serapis was therefore an appropriate tutelary god for most of the inhabitants of the city and for the community of Alexandria. His sanctuary was a center of Alexandrian education and philosophy. So, the destruction of the statue by order of bishop Theophilus should have forced the Christians of Alexandria to clarify their attitudes towards the pagan traditions.

Archäologische und schriftliche Hinweise zeigen, dass der verstärkt an ägyptischen Traditionen orientierte Kult in der Kaiserzeit, eine Identifikation des Gottes mit seinem Bild befördert hat. Serapis war für weite Teile der Bevölkerung ein kollektiver und individueller Schutzgott, sein Heiligtum eine Institution des alexandrinischen Bildungswesens. Daher wollte Bischof Theophilos durch die Zerstörung der Statue nicht zuletzt die Christen in der Stadt zu einem klaren Bekenntnis zwingen.
