Summary: | After the radical pietist-anabaptists community Ephrata was founded in 18th century Pennsylvania, monastic structures emerged rapidly during the process of institutionalization. This article focuses on Ephrata's nunnery and examines the interaction between social, economic and religious factors in the motives of the women for entering the cloister and for their choice of an ascetic way of life. To provide a deeper and wider insight into this process of decision-making, I will draw on certain aspects of rational choice theory, supplemented by a social historical contextualization. |
