Description
Summary:Penetrating the literature and civilisation of the Middle Ages requires decoding an era that is very distant from our own in the way its political, religious and philosophical systems functioned as well as use of symbolism, both Christian and pagan. The omnipresence of God in the everyday lives of people during the Middle ages is also a characteristic of literary works, which were of course written by educated clerics. God is naturally both omnipotent and omniscient in them; His existence does not need to be proved. He reveals Himself in the adventures of heros, in the ordeals or through miracles or symbols. In "Tristan et Isolde", the two lovers, victims of a love potion that forces them to lie, have God as a compagnion through the trials that put them to the test while at the same time proving to them the complicity of a benevolent God. This divine presence is also hidden in the heart of the literary structure of the work, in its internal geometry, comparable to that of a cathedral. Such structural subtleness puts the intelligence of the modern reader to the test and requires of him a certain modesty in his interpretation.
