520 |a The role of Rava bar Yosef bar Hama of Mehoza in the editing of the Babylonian Talmud has long been a matter of rabbinic and academic dispute.1 Although Seder Tannaim V'Amoraim is unequivocal in this regard, modern scholars have raised many doubts about Rava's editorial role. New evidence has connected Rava to the formulation and editing of the disputation sugyot of R.Yohanan and R.Laqish. This study expands that investigation significantly, examining over three hundred disputation sugyot formulated in the איתיביה פלוני לפלוני format. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data leads convincingly to the conclusion that this disputation terminology is the product of editorial activity in fourth and fifth-generation Mehoza, specifically stressing the transmission lines of R.Huna, Rabbah and R.Nahman bar Yaakov. The indicated explanation for this phenomenon is the network of transmission lines favored by Rava and his colleagues and students in Mehoza. The results of this research invite further analysis of other disputation terminology as a method for tracing the accumulation, formulation and editing of amoraic literature as a whole.
