Description
Summary:The aim of this paper is to give a social and cultural overview of ancient practices and knowledge concerning the consumption of wine at the royal court in Mari, on the Middle Euphrates (18th century BC). The exchange of wine as luxury product between royal courts and elites for political and ideological purposes is well documented by the administrative texts and the letters. There is also evidence for individual taste in wine: King Zimri-Lim himself knew the technical operations necessary for the preparation of wine that he liked for the consumption at the royal table.
