520 |a Gerard Manley Hopkins' 'That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire and of the Comfort of the Resurrection' has been well-examined regarding its allusions to both pre-Socratic philosophy and Christian eschatology. However, the clash between the two has yet to be examined as a synthesis rather than a dualism. I want to suggest that this synthesis enables the common reading of the poem as a reconciliation of the poet's 'terrible' sonnets and nature sonnets. By bringing Heraclitean cosmogony to bear upon Christian comfort, and vice versa, Hopkins interweaves imagery and language that is both joyful and fraught.
