Description
Résumé:In this paper I explore the concepts of delight and pleasure, and consider their relationship with medieval descriptions of the biblical Paradise. After briefly introducing relevant historiography, I consider the changing descriptions and interpretations of Paradise, from the biblical text to later medieval works. I then explore the taxonomies of pleasure and delight in Augustinian and Thomist philosophy. Finally I turn to three late-medieval dramatic texts, all of which share an interest in Paradise, and explore the ways in which these texts utilise the contemporary understanding of delight in order to reinforce their didacticism.
