| Résumé: | This article discusses important issues concerning the place of non-engagement and indifference in the studies done on secularism, and answers the following questions: how is it possible to be indifferent to religion in multicultural cities? Can non-engagement in religious conflicts be a solution to the life in such contexts? This article is based on a study carried out with 200 French and German teenagers that is grounded on a mixed method, i.e. research cross group interviews and quantitative questionnaire. The data analysis was realized within the frame of sociological phenomenology. The author distinguished three types of indifference: cognitive indifference, existential indifference and protective indifference. Those three types of indifference form a paradox in the secularization process because they are spreading out in multicultural societies among which religious plurality and its inherent conflicts are omnipresent. Cet article cherche à approfondir les questions de l'indifférence et du non-engagement au cœur des recherches consacrées à la sécularisation. Il cherche à répondre aux questions : comment est-il possible d'être indifférent à la question religieuse dans des villes multiculturelles? Le non-engagement dans les conflits religieux est-il une solution possible dans ce contexte?? L'article s'appuie sur une étude réalisée auprès de 200 adolescents français et allemands. La méthode déployée est mixte et croise des entretiens collectifs et un questionnaire quantitatif. L'analyse des données qualitatives a été réalisée dans le cadre de la sociologie phénoménologique d'Alfred Schütz. L'auteur distingue trois types d'indifférence: l'indifférence cognitive, l'indifférence existentielle et l'indifférence de protection. Ces trois types d'indifférence constituent un paradoxe de la sécularisation parce qu'ils se déploient dans des sociétés multiculturelles dans lesquelles la pluralité religieuse et les conflits en découlant sont omniprésents. |
