Cette dichotomie exprimait une rupture au sein du royaume, entre le cœur historique de la dynastie chrétienne au nord et les territoires périphériques du sud où le pouvoir central n'avait qu'une faible autorité sur les populations. Le choix de la conversion par ces populations fut de ce fait lié à leur soumission politique vis-à-vis du nouveau pouvoir et non à des questions d'ordre religieux. D'ailleurs, lors de la reconquête chrétienne, ces populations renièrent leur récente conversion et retournèrent dans le giron de l'Église éthiopienne, affirmant ainsi leur nouvelle allégeance au roi chrétien et leur rejet de l'autorité islamique. | ||
| 520 | |a In the 1530s, when the armies of the Sultanate of Barr Sa'd al-Dîn conquered the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia, inhabitants of the south of the kingdom chose to convert to Islam at the arrival of Muslim armies, while those of central and northern regions preferred to pay a tax as non-Muslims. This dichotomy reflected a division between the historic core of the Christian dynasty in the north, and peripheral territories in the south, where the central power had little authority over local populations. For the population of these latter territories, conversion was connected to political submission to the new power rather than to religious issues. Subsequently, at the time of the Christian reconquest, these populations repudiated their recent conversion and returned to the Ethiopian Church, thus asserting their renewed allegiance to the Christian king and their rejection of Islamic authority. | ||
