Pour vendre ou offrir des souvenirs aux fidèles, les monastères ou les évêques devaient souvent les acheter chez les producteurs semi-indépendants, ce qui fut un facteur important dans la formation d'un marché. D'autre part, la coutume veut que les icônes ne soient pas vendues, mais seulement « échangées ». Le commerce des icônes est évoqué dans l'Épître d'un peintre d'icônes à un autre peintre d'icônes, écrite par Iosif Vladimirov vers 1655-1658 ; cette source révèle la vente des icônes sur les marchés, pour un prix bas ou contre de la nourriture, et offre des indices sur l'identité sociale et culturelle des vendeurs. La vente des icônes semblait être le fait de marchands non spécialisés ; le commerce empruntait la voie fluviale. Cependant, l'époque voit apparaître des marchands spécialisés qui, à partir du début du xviiie siècle, traversent les frontières de la Moscovie pour vendre leur production en Serbie. | ||
| 520 | |a Two major characteristics make it possible to understand the production of devotional objects in seventeenth-century Muscovy. In the first place, the monastic and diocesan workshops specialized in the production of this type of objects are very few. To sell or offer souvenirs to the faithful, monasteries or bishops often had to buy them from semi-independent producers, and that was an important factor in order to create a market. On the other hand, traditionally icons are not sold, but only "exchanged". The trade of icons is evoked in the Epistle of an icon painter to another icon painter, written by Iosif Vladimirov around 1655-1658; this source reveals the sale of icons on the markets, for a low price or against food, and offers clues about the social and cultural identity of the sellers. The sale of the icons seemed to be the work of unskilled merchants; the trade took the river way. However, the period saw the appearance of specialized merchants who, from the beginning of the eighteenth century, crossed the borders of Muscovy to sell their production in Serbia. | ||
