520 | |a Since 1986, the Catholic Our Lady of Victory parish of Lackawanna, NY, and the diocese of Buffalo have been working to secure canonization for Father Nelson H. Baker (1842-1936), a local priest known for his sanctity, charitable Institutes, and promotion of devotion to Our Lady of Victory. The parish has a rich history of material and visual items related to both Baker and Our Lady. After he died, the Institutes produced and distributed Father Baker souvenirs, individuals obtained and created their own Baker memorabilia, various Father Baker memorials were established, and one of the Institutes' publications, the Victorian magazine, actively promoted the possibility of his sainthood. This article offers a comprehensive historical record of material and visual culture related to Baker from the 1880s to the 1950s in an effort to document the changes and shifts in the way he was represented in various materials, as well as the practices of his promoters, admirers, and followers which shaped those changes. As such, this piece seeks to demonstrate that material and visual culture are subject to a similar kind of performativity as lived practices and that they are a vital and important component of lived religion. | ||
