Their dissidence involved a significant confrontation with church authority. In interviews the dissidents expressed "liberal" attitudes in regard to authority, on theological matters, and on racial and ethnic minorities. Outlines of a "psychotherapeutic ethic" are discernible in their orientation to man and society. This orientation clarifies and is clarified by their self-images as derived from the Twenty Statements Test (TST), a device developed in G. H. Mead's tradition. The psychotherapeutic ethic needs close scrutiny. The particular dissidence of the priests suggests larger questions about dissidents. The possible emergence of a special personality type is also suggested.
