| Zusammenfassung: | Based on a questionnaire study of 405 students at three eastern colleges, it is shown that religious membership and religious preference are not interchangeable indices. As a consequence of using one or the other, the size and composition of the "no religion" group are affected. The two indicators relate differently to other measures of religiosity and to a social attitude. Preference is correlated with pacifism, while membership is not. It is suggested that the wording of questions regarding religious affiliation is crucial. |
