The "scholarly distance" theory of Lehman and Shriver, concerning differential impact of disciplines, was not supported. There was little evidence of a "religion of science" functionally equivalent to, and competing with, traditional religion. The strongest predictors of college teachers' religiosity were childhood religion and home culture. Religious commitments seem to have strong noncognitive sources which are little affected by intellectual training. | ||
