Description
Résumé:Pesantren is a form of traditional Islamic education (mostly at the middle and high school level) originating in Java and now found throughout Indonesia. Recently some pesantrens have become aware of environmental problems and transform themselves into eco-pesantren, which implements ecological practices into its activities and curricula. This paper aims to examine how one eco-pesantren - Pesantren Ath-Thaariq, Garut, West Java - as a religious-based institution teaches inclusive ideas to its students by developing ecological knowledge. Teaching about the ecology of Ath-Thaariq has multiple significances in terms of inclusive religious education. It expands the notion of inclusiveness in religious education to include not only people of other religions, but also, more broadly, non-human nature. Concerns about common environmental problems that cross boundaries between religions have made the pesantren a meeting ground for Muslim students belonging to different Islamic organizations as well as with members of other religious communities. From the viewpoint of ecological education, to be ecological is to be pluralist. The pesantren demonstrates how ecological education helps students to be more aware not only of the environment, but also humanity in general.
