This article analyses the opposite phenomenon: the purposeful use of expressions associated with other religious groups in the written discourse of an individual. This case study will explore the novel Būnā Anṭūn (Father Antun), written in 1937 by the journalist and author Karam Melhem Karam, in which the writer, who was a Maronite, constantly uses expressions associated with Islam. This article suggests that these expressions reflect the well-established multi-religious character of the society and that they are deliberately used as a way to rebel against an imposed sectarian social system.
