Description
Summary:Particularly noteworthy among the messianic movements that arose among modern Yemenite Jews is the one which was led by Shukr Kuhayl II, who was active from 1868-1875. He was preceded by Shukr Kuhayl I, who was active from 1859-1863. The account published here for the first time, written by one of the followers of Shukr Kuhayl II, gives us a better understanding of the movement as it was perceived by its adherents. Currently this is the only such account. The narrative recounts the early days of the movement from its beginnings during the days of Shukr Kuhayl I almost to the time of its end during the days of Shukr Kuhayl II. The account also describes the “miracles” performed for Shukr Kuhayl I and II, as well as their activities to bestir the people to repentance, and to raise funds for the movement.
