Summary:Almost a century ago Pope Leo XIII coldly brought about the re-establishment of Thomism. But can a philosophy be imposed in an authoritative manner unless it be for reasons unrelated to philosophy ? In point of fact, if the Church was losing its possessions and influence, Leo XIII refused to see it deprived of its thought at the same time ; even further, he considered that this thought could be the instrument whereby the Church might regain control over individual consciences and societies.
