The essay contends that Cobb, an African-American sharecropper from Alabama, is a deeply original practical theologian, some of whose insights anticipate trends in late-twentieth-century black theology. Guided by insights taken from Cornel West's Prophesy Deliverance!, the essay seeks to outline two distinct strands in Cobb's thought. The first is a simple but effective theodicy that attempts to reconcile the putative goodness of God with the world's \"dangers\" by boldly attributing those evils to the godhead. The second strand is a fascinating, functional effort to synthesize mainstream African-American Christianity and a quasi-Marxist social theory. The article also aims to situate Cobb's spirituality within the religious landscape of the rural black church in the first half of the twentieth century. | ||
