It is more a matter of a global ethnoracial otherness which, driven by a fundamental criticism of the persistent colonial rationale, demands deep political change. In contrast to this colonial rationale, the rationale of universal well-being is staked on a complete break with the present economic system, depending, as it does, on continuous growth across a geographically finite planet. Highlighting this need for a complete break as a fundamental requirement for the survival of humanity, the Catholic Church held a Synod for the Amazon in October 2019 with the theme: 'New ways for the Church and for an integral Ecology. In addition to committing to make public prophetic statements to combat the 'economic system that kills', the synod wanted to open 'new ways' for pastoral dialogue and, in seeking its 'Amazonian countenance to lay the foundation stone of a post-colonial Church. | ||
