Summary: | Ms. Neofiti 1, which contains an entire Palestinian Targum to the Pentateuch, cannot be regarded as an accurate copy. Recent studies have shown that this manuscript is defective in many respects. This article aims at examining another phenomenon which reflects scribal activity, namely: conflations. An examination of the Ms. Neofiti 1, especially its non halakhic portions, reveals about 40 scribal conflations which contain two different versions of the same verse. In four cases the conflations cover the entire verse: Gen. 44:18; Ex. 20:2—3, 23:2; Lev. 19:16. In some cases the conflations include unparalleled traditions, such as Gen. 27:34, 40:5; Ex. 20:2—3; Lev. 19:16; Num. 20:11. Comparing the conflations to the other known Targumic traditions shows that only in three cases (Gen. 3:24; 30:31; Deut. 11:12) can we conclude quite definitely that the conflations are influenced by Onkelos. This proves that, in spite of many errors and defects in Ms. Neofiti 1, the transmitters and copyists have basically used Palestinian material and only in very few cases did they use Onkelos |
