Summary:This study examines how Jews were depicted in popular novels set in the (ancient) Near East and Egypt from the end of the 19th century onwards. Works by Georg Ebers are compared to those of Gustav Flaubert and Karl May and will be subjected to imagological analysis in order to address issues of anti-Semitism and denominational conflicts as reflected in popular literature.
