Ce dernier n’aurait pas proposé une simple interprétation de l’extase de la sainte espagnole, ni une scène purement théâtrale, mais traduirait une conception intellectuelle récapitulant toute la pensée chrétienne de la mort et de la résurrection en entrecroisant, au moyen de la citation de la Pietà, les contraires chers au baroque, la mort et la vie, le naturel et le surnaturel, donnant à voir par la mise en scène liturgique du bel composto la philosophie et l’anthropologie du début du xviie siècle. L’approche pluridisciplinaire de l’œuvre, qui prend en considération la biographie de l’artiste, l’histoire des techniques architecturales, la postérité de Michel-Ange et les intertextualités artistiques, la mystique et la philosophie du premier xviie siècle, permet de dépasser les lectures partielles souvent proposées de la chapelle Cornaro et de répondre à des questions non encore pleinement résolues comme celle de l’unité de l’ensemble du composto et du rôle de chaque personnage représenté, ou de la cohérence des multiples points de vue possibles du spectateur. | ||
