La manière dont les différents auteurs parlent de cette figure se fait plus précise au cours des iie-iiie siècles, pour ce qui concerne la figure elle-même, aussi bien que les idées qui lui sont attribuées. Dans le même temps, les raisons pour lesquelles les chrétiens recourent à Hermès Trismégiste sont très variées, avec des constantes, mais aussi des variations qui sont liées à la fois aux buts que les auteurs se fixent dans les ouvrages où ils mentionnent Hermès et au contexte historique immédiat. | ||

Beyond a diffuse influence among polytheists and Christians, Hermes Trismegistus is explicitly mentioned by Christian authors as an "Egyptian sage", first in the Latin world, then in the Greek world during the 4th c. The way the Christian authors speak of Hermes becomes more precise during the period going from the 2nd to the 4th century, concerning both the figure itself as well as the ideas attributed to it. At the same time, the reasons for using Hermes Trismegistus are diverse. There are some constants in this use, but also variations that depend on the aims of the authors and on the immediate historical context. | ||
