Pour autant, cette éthique collective doit se conformer à l'exigence de neutralité, qui, dans une société démocratique pluraliste, s'exprime à la fois en termes d'intention et de justification. Comment alors, si ces conditions sont respectées, légitimer l'octroi d'exemptions, la reconnaissance d'éthiques individuelles en désaccord avec cette éthique collective ? A partir de notre terrain d'études, centré sur l'usage contemporain de l'objection au sein de croisades morales, examinée ici à l'aune d'autres formes d'objection, nous explorerons l'idée selon laquelle celles-ci ne peuvent faire l'objet que d'un usage restreint. Elles s'insèrent en effet dans une dynamique d'intersubjectivité citoyenne, qui pourrait aboutir, le cas échéant, à des conséquences tant individuelles (transfert de charges) que collectives, allant jusqu'à la mise en cause du cadre même de possibilité des autonomies individuelles. L'exemption ainsi, ne se justifie que si elle permet la conciliation de la démocratie et de l'État de droit. 
520 |a The existence of public values, and therefore of public morals, is an intrinsic characteristic of democratic politics, even when they are "the minimum values of liberal democracy" (Weinstock, "L'actualité du bien commun", 2004). However, this collective ethic must conform to the requirement of neutrality, which, in a pluralist democratic society, is expressed in terms of both intention and justification. How then, if these conditions are met, to justify the granting of exemptions, recognition of individual ethics in disagreement with this collective ethics? Based on our field of research (the contemporary use of the objection within moral crusades), we will defend the idea that they should be used in a restrictive way. They are indeed part of a dynamic of intersubjectivity, which could have both individual and collective consequences. They could even lead us to question the framework making possible individual autonomies. Exemption, therefore, is only justified if it allows the conciliation of democracy and the rule of law.
