520 |a A descriptive analysis of the ways in which the non-denominational Protestant monthly The Christian Herald attempted to mediate between Hollywood and American Protestants reveals the complexity and variety of Christian response to popular culture in the ostensibly quiescent and uniform 1950s. Moreover, film reviews, editorials, commentary and letters to the editor demonstrate how the Herald sought to exert control of Protestant activity vis-à-vis motion pictures at a time when Protestants were losing cultural hegemony and Hollywood itself was transitioning to new forms of production and distribution. Even as the decade is renowned for its biblical epics it becomes clear that concurrent legal and social changes prepared the way for the marginalization and eventual ineffectuality of concerted Christian action in this cultural area. These historical dynamics comprise a necessary and proximate background to understanding more contemporary developments such as the celebrated "culture wars" of the 1980s and 1990s.
