| 520 | |a This article retraces the case of the prophetesses of Pusiano (Angela and Teresa Isacchi), which developed in the 19th century in conjunction with the Italian unitary movement and the imminent end of the Pope's temporal power; it explores the case as a form of expression of apocalyptical, anti-revolutionary sensibility, which developed in Italy since the late 18th century. Based on the analysis of Angela's political prophecies on the Papacy and the apocalyptical literature composed by her devotees, this study aims at shedding light on their prophetical-eschatological interpretation of the Italian revolutionary context. The Isacchi's followers, in fact, employed their revelations, known as the Holy Word, as the unique possible key of interpretation of the contemporary political, social, and religious crisis. In this sense, the Holy Word is understood as a new and final part of the divine Revelation, after the Old and New Testaments, and as God's final act of mercy towards the Church and men, corrupted by the values of modernity. The analysis of the hierophanies of Pusiano (ca. 1850-ca. 1895), including Marian apparitions, Christological visions and revelations by the Persons of the Trinity, makes a contribution to the study of the religious and "supernatural" manifestations that developed, as a Catholic answer to the crisis of traditional Catholicism, in the delicate passage between Ancien Régime and modernity. | ||
