Spirit conjuring and seeing ghosts gave form to scares caused by rapid social change, in particular in the middle class. The participants of a séance projected their own distress on apparitions representing fears of social revolution and hope of peace as a gift from spirits. Psychical research was an answer to uncertainties caused by scientific revolution, also in Italy: science shook traditional and religious worldviews, but also showed the existence of invisible phenomena. Identities crisis caused by modern society increased a collective psychological revolution that made doubtful boundaries between thought, mind, and conscience. The paper inquires discussions and global networks of spiritualists, and addresses the issue of irrational in modern societies. | ||
