We need to go beyond this self-description and try to understand why spirituality is increasingly being constructed in opposition to religion and what our informants mean, when they say that they are spiritual. With this approach we discover that spirituality, religion and secularism are not completely distinct categories but mutually constitute each other (Asad, 2003 ; Fedele and Knibbe, 2013, 2020) and that the SBNR are not necessarily unchurched (Fedele, 2013 ; Fedele and Knibbe, 2013 ; Ammerman, 2013a). Through ethnographic examples I show how spirituality represents a safe middle ground between religion and secularism. It offers a lingua franca that allows describing religious experiences in increasingly secularized societies. This spiritual lingua franca is particularly useful when addressing issues related to gender and sexuality because it allows embracing secular values without renouncing to be religious. | ||

Il vise à comprendre ce que les acteurs sociaux veulent dire lorsqu’ils se décrivent comme « spirituels, mais non religieux » (« spiritual but not religious », SBNR). À cette fin, il est nécessaire de dépasser cette énonciation de soi et de comprendre pourquoi la spiritualité est de plus en plus construite en opposition à la religion. Il convient également de s’interroger sur ce que ces acteurs expriment quand ils disent être spirituels. Par cette approche cet article met en lumière les liens d’interdépendance entre la spiritualité, la religion et le sécularisme (Asad, 2003 ; Fedele et Knibbe, 2013, 2020) notamment en prouvant qu’être SBNR n’implique pas nécessairement l’absence d’appartenance à un groupe religieux (Fedele, 2013a ; Fedele et Knibbe, 2013 ; Ammerman, 2013a). À travers des exemples ethnographiques, je montre que la spiritualité et son langage peuvent représenter un terrain d’entente entre la religion et le sécularisme. La spiritualité offre ainsi une lingua franca qui permet de décrire des expériences religieuses dans des sociétés de plus en plus sécularisées. Cette dernière s’avère particulièrement utile pour aborder des problématiques liées au genre ou à la sexualité, donnant ainsi la possibilité aux adeptes de la spiritualité de défendre des positions séculières, sans pour autant renoncer à être religieux. | ||
