Kang gathered a sizable following, but did not appoint a successor. Among one hundred or more “Jeungsanist” religions, those claiming a lineage originating from Jo Jeongsan (1895-1958), who was not a direct disciple of Kang but claimed to have received a revelation from him, eventually emerged as the largest group. Divisions among Jo’s disciples occurred ten years after his death and lead to the foundation of Daesoon Jinrihoe in 1969 by Park Wudang (1917-1995 according to the lunar calendar traditionally adopted by the movement, or 1918-1996 according to the solar calendar). The article examines the history, main doctrines, practices and artistic achievements of Daesoon Jinrihoe, which claims six million members and is regarded by many as the largest Korean new religion.
