Le présent article se veut la troisième et dernière partie d’une étude consacrée à cette question. Après avoir examiné les trois déclarations de Paul au sujet des Juifs (Ac 13,46; 18,6; 28,28) et les suites qui découlent de chacune d’elles, il s’agit maintenant d’articuler ce qui n’est rien moins qu’un paradoxe. Pourquoi Paul affirme-t-il, par trois fois, son intention de se détourner des Juifs d’une part, pour ensuite continuer, de manière constante et récurrente, à fréquenter les synagogues et à se rendre, souvent en priorité, là où les Juifs se trouvent d’autre part? Stratégie rhétorique d’«amplification»? C’est l’hypothèse qu’on doit maintenant vérifier et, de manière surprenante, l’Institution oratoire de Quintilien pourrait bien se révéler utile à cet égard. En dernière analyse, le but de Luc était-il vraiment de prononcer la condamnation du peuple de l’Alliance en se détournant d’eux ou n’était-il pas plutôt de mettre en vedette le miracle inouï de l’arrivée des Gentils au sein de la communauté de ceux qui accueillent le salut en Jésus Christ? | ||

One looks in vain for consensus on this question within the exegetical community. This is the third and final article in a series devoted to the study of this question. Having examined Paul’s three declarations concerning the Jews (Acts 13:46; 18:6; 28:28) and the actions that follow, we now attempt to articulate what is nothing less than a paradox. Why does Paul affirm, on three occasions, his intention to turn away from the Jews on the one hand, and then continue repeatedly to frequent the synagogues and to travel to the places where the Jews are found, on the other? A strategy of 'amplification'? Surprisingly, the Institutio oratoria of the Roman rhetorician, Quintilianus, proves useful as we attempt to verify this hypothesis. In the final analysis, was it really Luke’s aim to condemn the people of the covenant by turning away from them? Or was it rather to highlight the amazing miracle of the arrival of Gentiles within the community of those who welcomed salvation in Jesus Christ? | ||
