520 |a Two recent works address the role of hope in Christian ethics, though with quite different results. The first, by seasoned theologian Jürgen Moltmann, takes a lifetime's worth of reflection on the transformative nature of hope and draws out its ethical implications. The second appears as the first major work from David Elliot, meeting avoidance or explicit rejection of hope in contemporary ethics with a robustly Thomistic response. After an exposition of each book, key differences emerge. Moltmann advances concrete ethical proposals, whereas Elliot engages important theoretical questions. Moltmann develops an ethics for today, whereas Elliot takes a more general approach. Some criticisms that Elliot makes of Moltmann's theology provide a point of departure for discussion of these and other differences between the two works.
