Ces constructions incarnent en fait pour les uns la spatialisation d’une pratique religieuse, tandis que pour d’autres, outre un risque sécuritaire, elles représentent une menace au patrimoine architectural du quartier et à sa beauté. Cette matrice se décline cependant de façon différente selon que les résidents du quartier - hassidim et non hassidim - s’expriment au micro du conseil d’arrondissement ou dans des conversations en aparté. La dissonance entre ces deux discours nous amènera à des considérations sur la cristallisation de cette discussion publique sur des questions spatiales et juridiques et sur l’évitement de la religion et des enjeux de la cohabitation, à Outremont et au Québec. | ||
| 520 | |a Based on fieldwork observations and interviews, this article examine the public conversation that arose when a change in the zoning by-law concerning sukkahs was proposed in Outremont, focussing in particular on the spatial matrix of the controversy. For some citizens, these structures epitomize in fact the spatialization of a religious practice, while for others they represent a threat to the borough’s architectural heritage and beauty, in addition to posing a risk to safety. However, these views are expressed quite differently depending on whether the residents - Hassidim and non-Hassidim - are speaking publicly at meetings of the town council or in private conversations. Starting from the discordance between these two modes of discourse, we then consider how this public discussion eventually came to crystallize around attitudes regarding the spatial and legal aspects, and how the avoidance of religion and the challenges of cohabitation have recently played out in Outremont and the province of Quebec. | ||
