520 |a In an intertextual reading, Hippolytus’ commentary correlates the Song of Songs with other texts from the Hebrew Bible as well as the New Testament, thereby generating new meanings due to the determinative christological perspective. In accordance with contemporary rabbinic exegesis of the Song, the figure of the female lover is seen as symbolizing Israel or the synagogue respectively, which in Hippolytus’ view is longing for the (incarnated) word of God which is Christ. By the configuration with Eve on the one hand, and the myrophores of the resurrection narratives of the gospels on the other, she is characterized as a sinner who in the end becomes an apostle of the Resurrected One (but at this point seems to be substituted by the church).
