Numa abordagem sistemática, os autores apresentam a história da Companhia desde a sua criação até à sua consolidação, e posterior decadência, formatada numa visão antijesuítica, que visava denegrir a Ordem, e posteriormente derrubá-la. Não apresentando novidades aos mais recentes estudos da Companhia de Jesus, objeto de debates historiográficos das mais variadas frentes, ressalta-se, nesta obra, a publicação de um importante documento intitulado información en la causa de los estudios dePortugal /informação sobre a causa dos estudos no reino de Portugal (representaçãodos Jesuítas Portugueses ao rei de Espanha), que contrapõe toda uma argumentação contra os estudos preconizados pelos inacianos. Confronto e capacidadeempreendedora foram palavras de ordem na história da Companhia, que constantementese debateu com opositores, graças ao acúmulo de riquezas e ao capital econômicogerado, para sustentar os seus colégios. | ||
